Q: What is the Workforce Recruitment Program?
A: The Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) connects public and private employers with highly motivated undergraduates, graduate students and recent graduates who are eager to prove their abilities in the workplace through summer or permanent jobs. The WRP provides individuals opportunities to market their abilities to a wide variety of potential employers across the United States, sharpen their interviewing skills, gain valuable work experience and establish job contacts. The WRP is co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and the U.S. Department of Defense’s Office of Diversity Management & Equal Opportunity (ODMEO) with support from other federal agencies.
Q: How does the program work?
A: August 24, 2020 – Student registration opens. Participants are able to begin their application by going to www.wrp.gov. The student will be asked to create a profile and submit basic information. After this is completed, a school coordinator will approve the application and the student can then begin to upload the other required documents as part of their application.
October 14, 2020 – Student registration closes. This is the last date that students can submit their application materials.
October 20, 2020 – Deadline for Coordinators to submit WRP interview accommodation request forms. Students need to have had a conversation with the school coordinator regarding accommodations they would like to request for the phone information interview. Please note that this interview is optional.
October 26 - November 18, 2020 – Informational interview period via phone (optional)
December 2020 – Student applications available to employers for one year
Q: Who is eligible to participate?
A: Applicants for the WRP must:
- Have a disability that allows for Schedule A* eligibility
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be enrolled on a full-time basis (unless taking a reduced course load through the Disability Resource Center or in the last semester before graduation) or be a recent graduate (In order to be eligible for the WRP this year, students must have graduated on or after April 1, 2018).
*To be Schedule A eligible, you will need to meet any one of the following criteria:
- Registered with and/or receive accommodations through the Disability Resource Center.
- Received Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
- Diagnosed with a medical condition that is treated by a mental health professional such as a learning disability, ADHD, anxiety disorder, etc.
- Identified as needing services through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
- Received services in elementary or high school through an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 plan.
- Received vocational rehabilitation services.
- Covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) and/or the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended definitions of an individual with a disability.
To be eligible for appointment via Schedule A, candidates must be able to provide supporting documentation, referred to as a Schedule A Letter. The letter may be completed by a licensed medical professional, licensed vocational rehabilitation counselor, or any agency that provides disability benefits. Unfortunately, Disability Resource Center staff cannot complete Schedule A Letters. Although candidates may not need to provide a Schedule A letter until later in the hiring process, having it upfront will improve the chances of being hired quickly. Q: What is the application process?
A: Online registration is open from August 24, 2020 - October 14, 2020. Candidates must register through the WRP Student Self-Registration page at www.wrp.gov. All registrations must be approved by a Campus Coordinator before candidates can complete their applications. Candidates may be contacted by a Campus Coordinator to confirm their eligibility. Once a candidate’s registration is approved, they will receive an email with a username and temporary password and may begin the application process.
Candidates can log into the Online Application Page at www.wrp.gov using their username and temporary password. Items to be obtained and/or completed by the candidate and submitted online prior to the interview include:
- (Required) Resume - Word documents are required
- (Required) College Transcript(s) - Official or unofficial transcripts or copies of transcripts are acceptable. Word or other text documents are strongly encouraged
- (Optional) Any additional supporting documents, such as letters of recommendation, writing samples, Schedule A Letter, etc.
- All documents must be uploaded to the Manage Documents Page of the online application in order for a candidate’s application to be complete.
After registration has been approved and all application materials have been uploaded, the Campus Coordinators will contact candidates to schedule their phone interviews with a WRP Recruiter. These interviews are optional, conducted over the phone, and students can request accommodations if needed. Interviews will take place October 26 - November 18, 2020.
Q: What agencies hire from the WRP Database?
A: The agencies that hire from the WRP database change and vary from year to year. Federal agencies who employed WRP candidates include the Departments of Defense, Labor, Agriculture, Commerce, Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Justice, State, Treasury, and Veterans Affairs; the Social Security Administration; the Federal Housing Finance Agency; the Nuclear Regulatory Commission; and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Candidates have worked in more than 38 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and as civilian employees on military bases in Germany, Italy, and South Korea.
Q: What sort of jobs will the candidates be assigned?
A: Candidates are not interviewing for specific positions at specific agencies. They have the opportunity to have an elective informational interview with a federal recruiter to learn about federal service and discuss their career path. Candidates are not placed into jobs; they are simply applying to be part of a database of postsecondary students and recent graduates with disabilities that is made available to federal employers directly and to the private sector through a contractor. Employers will then reach out to candidates directly if they are interested in interviewing or hiring them for a specific position. Candidates should be aware that WRP is not a guarantee of employment and not everyone who participates in WRP is contacted by employers.
Q: Are all WRP opportunities paid?
A: While most WRP opportunities are paid, please note that there are some cases and agencies who may reach out to current students about unpaid opportunities. In those cases, the candidate may be asked if they are interested and able to do the internship for school credit. Like with all opportunities, the candidate is welcome to decline if they are not in a position to take an unpaid internship position.
